Where: Tampa Bay Watch is located at Tampa Bay Watch, Inc. | 3000 Pinellas Bayway South, Tierra Verde, FL 33715.
What (details for the student programs that all will be participating within):
Plankton Encounter: Students collect water samples and use microscopes to discover the life within a water drop. Students learn about some of the smallest plants and animals in the marine environment and their importance.
Seine The Bay: Students wade into shallow seagrass beds, exploring the habitat and using nets to collect marine organisms.
What to Bring / How to Prepare:
Specifically for the ‘seining the bay’, students will be wading in shallow water. Students should wear clothing that can get wet. Wearing only a bathing suit is not permissible, however, a bathing suit can be worn underneath shorts and a top. Wearing bathing suit ‘shorts’ or 'board shorts' is also permissible along with an appropriate top or 'swim shirt'. Of course, please wear non SJE uniform clothing!
Students must wear closed toe shoes that can get wet. Crocs are NOT permissible. However, old sneakers, water shoes, or ‘dive’ boots are all recommended.
Students should bring a towel, change of clothes, dry shoes, and a plastic bag to put all wet items in.
Students MUST bring a packed lunch (and drink) from home. There is a covered storage section at the facility for student lunches, so students may (and are encouraged) to bring their lunch boxes (with insulation and an ice pack) as well as their water bottles. Students will bring their lunch boxes and water bottles with them on the bus. A plastic bag or paper bag lunch is not required.
When bringing sunscreen, a lotion is required and not a spray. Spray sunscreen should not be worn.
Hats, sunglasses, etc are all permissible.
Phones and smart watches are not permissible. Chaperones will be taking pictures of the events of the day for the class books, yearbook, etc.
If Interested in Being a Chaperone
There will be 5 chaperone slots available per homeroom for parent participation (10 total).
Chaperones will drive directly to TBW on October 4th and meet the fourth grade students and faculty at the facility. Chaperones may have their own child accompany them in the car when driving over as well as depart in turn with their child. Student friends or peers may not, unfortunately, accompany chaperones in cars to or from the field trip.
Bathing suits are not required for chaperones, and all student details above apply to any parent interested in chaperoning.
Thanks in advance for your time and attention spent joining us for all of the fun on this day!
Warmly,
Michael
